they think it clever that with rhymes they scale a wall
and see themselves as heroes of some sceptered race;
in fact they are the lame who lead the blind – that’s all
for what they leave behind is just a scribbled trace
of wasted time and talents plus outlandish pride –
their gifts reduced to tricks, a sop for dimwit crowds –
when what is sadly needed are truths MAGNIFIED
not drivel, self-involved, beneath ten shapes of clouds;
too much has been betrayed and lost – who’s not aware
that television news has warped the mainstream mind?
those with voices rich and strong must always dare
to slay the merchant dragons – leave not one behind!
the gift of speech, I think, implies a certain price
to say what must be said, and not just what sounds nice
.
